Organized by Public Institute for the Deaf of Rome, the First Deaf Film Festival of Rome – CINEDEAF – came to an end on 5 May 2012.
The festival, divided in four sections, offered to its audience the opportunity to enjoy 33 works produced by deaf or hearing directors from all over the world and purposely subtitled by Associazione CulturAbile Onlus. The organizing committee expresses its great enthusiasm in communicating the deep interest showed by people. In fact, Cinedeaf registered an audience of about 1,400 people and the official blog – cinedeafroma.wordpress.com – had more than 20,000 visitors. Moreover, both TV and press agencies were really highly interested in the Festival. People had the opportunity to enjoy a lot of very exclusive events. For example, Cinedeaf showed the Italian première of THE HAMMER and SEE WHAT I’M SAYING and the first showing in Rome of the film SONO RIMASTO SENZA PAROLE by Elisabetta Sgarbi, who not only was among the audience with one of the main characters of her film – the writer Pino Roveredo – but they also answered all questions coming from the audience.
Thanks to the support of the American Embassy was also possible to let Italian audience enjoy the enchanting work by the deaf artist Christine Sun Kim who made a live performance on sound and its vibrations. In addition, thanks to the presence of many directors or, in some cases, of actors – both from Italy and all over the world – people had the opportunity to attend to various debates about the showed movies or shorts and Deaf Cinema in general. The Festival had also a special section: a CONTEST addressed to deaf and hearing directors from all over the world. Selected among 150 films that applied for the competition, 19 works were shown and judged by a skilled jury that were present during the three days of the Festival. On 5 May, the jury members awarded the following prizes:
BEST SHORT FILM – DEAF DIRECTOR ex-aequo

“THE END” (by Ted Evans, UK, 2011, 23’52”)
